21 lug 2026

One month after the conclusion of the 2026 Monteverdi Festival, it is time to take stock. The figures confirm the success of an edition that has further consolidated the Festival as one of Europe's leading events dedicated to Baroque music and early music theatre, while strengthening Cremona's position as an international cultural destination.

With around 7,000 attendees across ticketed performances and free events, the Festival recorded significant growth, including an increase of more than 20% in attendance at ticketed events compared with the previous edition. These results demonstrate the artistic project's ability to attract an ever-growing, loyal audience willing to return year after year and experience the Festival as a truly immersive cultural event.

"The results of the 2026 Monteverdi Festival confirm that investing in culture means investing in the development of our city," said Andrea Virgilio, Mayor of Cremona and President of the Ponchielli Theatre Foundation. "The growth in audiences, the increase in international visitors, and the significant economic impact on the local community demonstrate that Cremona is increasingly recognised worldwide as a destination of excellence for music, art, and cultural heritage. The Festival is not only an event of outstanding artistic quality but also a driver of value for the local area, engaging cultural institutions, businesses, and citizens alike.

These figures encourage us to continue with determination in promoting Cremona's cultural identity, making the legacy of Claudio Monteverdi and our musical tradition an ever more distinctive element of the city's international profile.

I would also like to express my sincere thanks to Superintendent Andrea Nocerino and the entire team at Teatro Ponchielli, which continues to be one of the city's most important cultural institutions. Through the Monteverdi Festival, it plays a vital role in enhancing our musical identity and strengthening Cremona's position as a leading cultural destination in Europe."

An Increasingly International Festival

The 2026 Monteverdi Festival welcomed audiences from 36 countries, further confirming its international vocation. International visitors accounted for 18.5% of total attendance, an increase of six percentage points compared with 2025.

The largest groups came from France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and Austria, while the Festival also welcomed visitors from across Europe as well as Australia, South Korea, the United States, Israel, and South America. These figures confirm that Claudio Monteverdi's legacy, combined with the Festival's artistic excellence, continues to be a powerful international cultural attraction.

Italian audiences also continued to choose Cremona for the Festival, travelling not only from Lombardy but also from many other regions, particularly Emilia-Romagna, Veneto, Piedmont, Tuscany, and Lazio.

Longer Stays, Greater Benefits for the Local Economy

The Monteverdi Festival continues to generate not only cultural value but also significant economic and tourism benefits. The 2026 edition saw many visitors extending their stay in Cremona to attend multiple Festival events, contributing to a widespread positive impact across the local economy.

During Festival weekends, hotels and other accommodation facilities reached occupancy levels of up to 99%, producing significant benefits for restaurants, retailers, service providers, and the wider tourism sector.

This confirms the Festival's strong multiplier effect and demonstrates once again that culture is a strategic investment in the city's development.

Telling Cremona's Story to the World

The 2026 edition also attracted exceptional media attention. Accredited journalists from leading Italian and international outlets reported extensively on the Festival while showcasing Cremona's artistic, architectural, and musical heritage. Notably, the number of accredited international media representatives doubled compared with the previous year.

This visibility further strengthens the city's international positioning and confirms the Monteverdi Festival as one of Cremona's foremost cultural ambassadors worldwide.

A City at the Heart of the Festival

The Monteverdi Festival continues to stand out for its ability to involve the entire city, transforming Cremona into a large open-air stage.

The 2026 edition opened with a packed Piazza del Duomo for La Fortuna è un instabile Equilibrio, the Festival's major opening-day event, which combined a striking choral flash mob with a spectacular high-wire performance.

This emotionally powerful and visually stunning event preceded the sold-out opening performance of Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine at the Church of Sant'Agostino.

The programme unfolded through operas, concerts, lectures, and special events, culminating in the Festival's new Sunrise Concert, which exceeded all expectations by attracting an extraordinary audience in an intimate and shared atmosphere that became one of the defining moments of the entire Festival.

Numerous performances sold out, confirming public appreciation for an artistic programme centred on Monteverdi's vocal music, early opera, scholarly research, and public engagement, creating an ongoing dialogue between artistic excellence, academic insight, and accessibility.

Once again, Cremona symbolically dressed itself in the Festival's colours, with Monteverdi-themed silhouettes displayed throughout the city, creating a shared visual identity and a festive atmosphere enjoyed by residents, visitors, and local businesses alike.

A Growing Network

The success of the Monteverdi Festival has been made possible through close collaboration between institutions, cultural organisations, associations, and local partners within a network that continues to expand beyond Cremona to include Lodi, Pavia, Crema, and Mantua.

The Festival also reaffirmed its commitment to inclusion by bringing Monteverdi's music into places dedicated to care and wellbeing. Particularly meaningful were the events hosted at Fondazione Occhi Azzurri and Ancelle della Carità Care Home, together with the Monteverdi Accessibile project, which made one of the Festival's opera productions accessible to people with sensory disabilities.

In doing so, the Festival once again demonstrated its social and cultural value, fostering relationships, participation, and wellbeing throughout the community.

A Festival Growing Through Digital Storytelling

Alongside its critical and public success, the 2026 Monteverdi Festival also significantly strengthened its digital presence. Throughout the Festival, its social media channels provided daily coverage not only of performances but also behind-the-scenes content, artists, rehearsals, iconic venues, and the unique atmosphere that animated Cremona during the event, becoming not merely communication platforms but a genuine extension of the Festival experience.

This storytelling successfully engaged both those attending in person and an increasingly large international online community, amplifying the Festival's visibility far beyond the city's borders.

During the 2026 edition, content published on Facebook and Instagram generated more than three million views, while the Festival's online community grew by over 30% compared with the previous year.

Particularly noteworthy was the profile of the digital audience reached: a broad demographic spanning all age groups, with a geographical distribution closely reflecting that of in-person visitors. The Festival's strongest online audiences came from the same regions and countries that recorded the highest attendance, confirming digital communication as a strategic tool for promoting both culture and tourism, strengthening audience engagement, and attracting new visitors to Cremona.

The Monteverdi Festival as a Model for Cultural Development

"The 2026 Monteverdi Festival confirms the strength of a project that continues to grow year after year while reinforcing Cremona's role within the international cultural landscape," said Luca Burgazzi, Councillor for Tourism and the City of Music.

"The increase in attendance, the growth in international visitors, and the significant impact on tourism and local commerce demonstrate that culture is a strategic driver of urban development.

The Festival celebrates Claudio Monteverdi's legacy while presenting to the world a dynamic, open, and welcoming Cremona capable of combining artistic excellence, public participation, and international appeal. It is an experience that engages the entire community and strengthens our identity as a City of Music.

Results such as these reinforce the path we have undertaken and represent an important asset as Cremona prepares its bid to become Italian Capital of Culture 2029. The Monteverdi Festival demonstrates that investing in culture means creating opportunities, building relationships, and shaping the future of the local community."

Artistic excellence, international appeal, economic development, and civic participation: the 2026 edition leaves behind not only impressive figures but also an even stronger image of Cremona as a city of music, beauty, and hospitality, ready to embrace future international challenges with confidence and ambition. It stands as a model of sustainable growth in which culture, tourism, and community advance together.
